HI- My name is Barbara Loschiavo Murray
My collection is for non gender apparel and is called Conspicuous Non-consumption. It was
inspired by the aesthetic and mindset of the 1980’s, particularly based on Mikasa dishware and
Leonard Paris dresses. I feel today’s culture is the opposite of the displayed excess of the
1980’s. This collection aims to capture it’s asthetic but reimagine it for today’s world.
I screenprinted yardage with a repeating loop design in two colorways – I used four screens,
four colors and water based crayon directly on the screen., I also printed a second repeating
grouped tulip design using two screens and two colors, printing them in different variations
These designs were digitally created -they began with hand drawing and watercolor
painting–then they were scanned and assembled into several repeating designs and printed on
different fabrics in varying scales.
Some of the digital floral and border geo designs were embellished with embroidery and
beading adding rich color and texture
The plaids were created from a border repeat that was cut in half lengthwise and arranged in
an irregular grid and then printed on natural linen
A hand painted floral in gauoche, and a border painted with dye and metallic inks continued
the vibe of the collection
Accent designs were developed in illustrator and cut with a digital laser into faux leather
substrate in various colors--the linear repeat design is to be used as an edging border on a skirt
bottom or sleeve-the square motif is for engineered placement on a garment or accessory..
A simple tulip pattern was printed on natural linen and embellished with earthy embroidery for
a natural and laid back feel-complimenting the richer more vibrant texture of the former pieces
Lastly I created a jacquard design in the Texcelle program–I used many different weaves to
add lots of tactile texture. It was woven at a mill using a black polyester warp and specialty
yarns in purple and blue for the wefts.
(The picture here is a simulation–but i just got the actual woven piece today.)
Thanks very much for viewing my collection
and many thanks to everyone at FIT that have helped me along the way!!
